Hokkaido in December with Kids (2026): What's Open, Where Kids Can Play in the Snow

Every date, time and price below is from the official site of the place or its organiser, checked 31 October 2026. "Planned" means the official site gives that date as planned, usually depending on snow. Where the 2026-27 schedule isn't out yet, last season's is given and marked "last year". Yen to ringgit at ¥100 = RM2.58 (ECB, 30 October 2026).

Short answer (checked 31 Oct 2026). For the first week of the school holidays, 7–11 Dec 2026, the snow that's scheduled to be open in Hokkaido is at the ski resorts: Sapporo Kokusai (20 Nov), Sapporo Teine (21 Nov), Niseko Grand Hirafu, Rusutsu and Kiroro (28 Nov), all planned. The family snow spots most people picture aren't open yet: Takino Snow World in Sapporo is closed 11 Nov–22 Dec and opens 23 Dec, Tomamu's Ice Village opens 20 Dec (planned), and the Asahiyama Zoo penguin walk started 18 Dec last year. The Sapporo Snow Festival is 4–11 Feb 2027. If your trip is 21 Dec–1 Jan, almost everything is open, but one-day lift prices at Niseko and Rusutsu go up mid-holiday.

1. 7–11 Dec 2026: what's open, what isn't

Example: a family of 2 adults + kids aged 8 and 5, one-day lift tickets on 7–11 Dec 2026 (counter prices, no rentals):

In Odori Park, the Munich Christmas Market is also open 20 Nov–25 Dec 2026, 11am–9pm; its stalls sell mulled wine and food we haven't checked. For kids who just want to touch snow without skiing, the closest options on 7–11 Dec are the beginner areas at the Sapporo ski resorts, or Bibai if you go on 10–11 Dec.

2. 21 Dec 2026–1 Jan 2027: almost everything is open

The same family (2 adults + kids aged 8 and 5) on 28 Dec 2026: Niseko United ¥43,200 (≈ RM1,115), Rusutsu ¥50,000 (≈ RM1,290) at the counter or ¥39,200 (≈ RM1,011) online, Kiroro ¥23,900 (≈ RM617), Sapporo Kokusai still ¥16,800 (≈ RM433).

3. Clothing and safety

Sapporo 10-day normals, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), 1991–2020. Mean / mean max / mean min (°C) · snowfall for those 10 days.

• Snow stays on the ground in Sapporo from 3 Dec on average (JMA). On 7–11 Dec there's usually snow, but it's still thin compared with the end of the month.
• Dress for below 0°C: base layer, sweater, thick jacket, hat, waterproof gloves, and shoes with non-slip soles. The full list by temperature is in Japan weather by month.
• Tomamu's Ice Village is open at night only (5–10pm). With small kids, plan short spells outside and go indoors to warm up.
• It gets dark early. Maghrib in Sapporo in December is around 4pm, so plan snow play for the morning. Details are in Sapporo hotels for Muslim families.

4. Food and prayer

This article doesn't repeat the food and prayer-room lists. See:

• Niseko, Otaru, Furano, Asahikawa: Hokkaido in winter with Muslim kids, halal food and prayer rooms. In our check (1 Oct 2026), the official tourism sites for Asahikawa and Niseko don't mention prayer rooms; plan to pray at your accommodation.

5. Traps

• "Penguin walk" day tours in early December. The zoo is open from 11 Nov, but the penguin walk depends on snow. Last year it started on 18 Dec 2025, and the zoo was closed 30 Dec–1 Jan. If your tour is before 18 Dec, check that the penguin walk is actually running that day.
• The free snow parks aren't open yet. Takino Snow World is closed 11 Nov–22 Dec 2026. Sapporo Kokusai's Snow Playground and Tomamu's Ice Village are also late December. Takino itself says some facilities may not open after 23 Dec if there isn't enough snow.
• The snow festivals are in February, not December. Sapporo Snow Festival 4–11 Feb 2027, Otaru Snow Light Path 6–13 Feb 2027, Shikotsu Ice Festival 30 Jan–23 Feb 2027. The White Illumination in Odori Park ends on 25 Dec.
• Lift prices rise mid-holiday, and "child" means different ages. Niseko goes up on 12 Dec and 24 Dec, Rusutsu on 12 Dec and 19 Dec, Kiroro on 12 Dec. A child is 4–12 at Niseko and Rusutsu, 6–12 at Kiroro, and "primary school" at Sapporo Kokusai. The Sapporo ⇄ Rusutsu bus also becomes paid from 28 Nov 2026 (Rusutsu's official site).
