Example family: 2 adults + 2 kids (8 and 5), leaving from Osaka Namba. Fares from Ekitan and Kintetsu, admission from the Nara City Tourism Association, deer crackers and deer rules from the Nara Deer Preservation Foundation. Fares and admission checked 25 September 2026; halal food, the prayer room and the mosque checked 24 October 2026 (HGJ, Nara City, the mosque's page, NAOJ). Rate ¥100 = RM2.605 (ECB, 23 October 2026).

Eat and pray (24 Oct). Halal restaurants are next to Kintetsu Nara Station (Niku-no-Asatsu, GYUMON); the prayer room is in front of JR Nara, 09:00–17:00 (Nara City); Nara Masjid is in the south of the city. In December Maghrib is at 16:46 — see the 4 traps in §1.

Short answer. From Osaka Namba to Kintetsu Nara: 38 minutes, no change, ¥680 adult / ¥340 child, and your 5-year-old rides free on Kintetsu. For four, return trains + Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall + 2 bundles of deer crackers = ¥5,800 ≈ RM151. Don't buy the Kintetsu Rail Pass for a plain Namba–Nara return: it costs this family ¥1,350 (≈ RM35) more.

HGJ also lists Umemori (main store), Naramachi Jinniyah, and prayer spaces at KAI and NARAigoto EENA HOUSE; we haven't rechecked their status or hours on 24 Oct. Heading back to Osaka for dinner? Our Namba/Dotonbori list is here; from Kyoto, the Kyoto list.

4 traps for families

  1. The prayer room closes at 17:00; Maghrib is at 16:46. On 1–15 December the sun sets in Nara at 16:46–16:47 (NAOJ). The JR Nara prayer room is open only 09:00–17:00 (Nara City). Want to pray Maghrib there? Arrive before 16:45. After that, pray at your hotel or once you're back in Osaka/Kyoto.
  2. JR Nara and Kintetsu Nara are two stations, about 0.9 km apart. The halal restaurants (Niku-no-Asatsu, GYUMON) are next to Kintetsu Nara; the prayer room is in front of JR Nara (straight-line distance, our calculation). From Kyoto, Kintetsu (¥760, ≈ 47 min) drops you by the halal restaurants and about 1.2 km from Todai-ji; JR (¥720) drops you next to the prayer room but about 2 km from Todai-ji.
  3. Nara's mosque is not in Nara Park. It's in Minami-Kyobate-cho, in the south of the city: 9 minutes' walk from JR Kyobate, or 23 minutes from JR Nara (mosque's page). The Friday prayer time on the mosque's page (13:00–13:30, 2023 schedule) and on HGJ (12:00–13:00) don't match; contact the mosque through the email on its page before Friday.
  4. Drop bags before 14:00. The same information center keeps bags 09:00–16:00 but stops accepting them at 14:00 (Nara City). On your Kyoto → Osaka hotel-change day, come early, or use the Kintetsu Nara Station lockers (§7).

2. On your own, or on a tour?

3. Getting there (one way)

FromTrainAdult / childTime
Osaka NambaKintetsu Nara Line, Rapid Express to Kintetsu Nara¥680 / ¥340≈ 38 min, no change
Kyoto (Kintetsu)Kintetsu Kyoto Line, Express via Yamato-Saidaiji¥760 / ¥380≈ 47 min (Limited Express +¥520, ≈ 35 min)
Kyoto (JR)JR Nara Line, Miyakoji Rapid to JR Nara¥720 / ¥360≈ 56–62 min
Osaka (JR)JR Yamatoji Rapid to JR Nara¥820 adult≈ 50 min

Kids under 6: on Kintetsu, children aged 1–5 ride free, up to 2 for each paying adult or child. Children 6–11 pay half (Kintetsu).

4. Is the Kintetsu Rail Pass worth it?

AdultChild (6–11)Example family
Kintetsu Rail Pass 1day¥1,900¥950¥4,750 (5-year-old free)
Normal tickets Namba ⇄ Nara¥1,360¥680¥3,400

The pass costs more for a Namba–Nara return, and still costs more if you do Kyoto → Nara → Namba in one day (normal tickets ¥3,600 for this family). It includes Nara Kotsu buses around Nara Park, Nishinokyo and Horyu-ji, so it only starts to make sense if you ride those buses too. If you will: Kintetsu Rail Pass on Klook (from RM48.05, ★4.7, 6,811 reviews).

5. Budget for four (from Namba)

ItemWorkingYenRM
Return trains¥680 × 2 adults × 2 + ¥340 × 2 (8-year-old); 5-year-old free¥3,40089
Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall¥800 × 2 + ¥400 (primary-school child)¥2,00052
Deer crackers2 bundles × ¥200 (10 crackers each)¥40010
Total¥5,800151

The source doesn't list a price for pre-school children at Todai-ji; ask at the counter. Optional: Kasuga Taisha main sanctuary ¥700 per adult (Kasuga Taisha).

6. The deer: three rules for kids

Nara's deer are wild animals. The Nara Deer Preservation Foundation says they can bite, kick, butt and charge, and older people and families with small children should take extra care.

  1. Only buy crackers when you're ready to hand them over. Hold them too long and the deer will chase you. Show, then give straight away.
  2. Let an adult hold the crackers; small kids stand behind.
  3. Only give deer crackers, no other food (not the kids' snacks either).

7. How to plan the day

Stay in Osaka and do Nara and Kyoto as day trips: our Osaka family hotel prices and Osaka hotels for 2 adults + 2 kids on Trip.com (filter "free cancellation").

8. Nara in December

December averages in Nara: high 11.6°C, low 3.0°C (JMA, 1991–2020). Mornings on the deer lawns are cold; bring warm jackets and gloves for the kids. Other months: Japan weather by month.
