JR Pass Price Increase on 1 October 2026: New Prices, When to Buy, and When the Pass Isn't Worth It
Checked 2026-09-06 · Updated 2026-10-30
Written by Tanya Jepun — a Japanese guy living in Malaysia. I read the JR press release (in Japanese) and the official pages for you. Every price was checked on 6 September 2026 with a source link. When a price changes, I update it here.
Short answer (official price page checked 30 Oct 2026). Since 1 October 2026, a JR Pass bought through overseas agents (Klook, travel agencies, appointed JR sales offices) has cost more: the 7-day ordinary pass goes ¥50,000 → ¥53,000 (≈ RM1,295 → RM1,372). What counts is the purchase date, not your travel date. The official JR web shop is still at the old price, ¥50,000, with no end date announced yet. And the part that matters most: if your trip is only Tokyo ⇄ Osaka/Kyoto, the 7-day pass loses almost ¥20,000, before or after the increase.
The sums for the route most Malaysians take are in a new article: Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka? (2026).
0. Update, 30 October 2026: the new prices have applied since 1 October
| What | Before 1 Oct | From 1 Oct (in force) | What to do now |
|---|---|---|---|
| JR Pass from overseas agents (Klook, travel agencies) | 7-day ordinary ¥50,000 (≈ RM1,298) | ¥53,000 (≈ RM1,376) | The old agent price has ended. An Exchange Order bought before 1 Oct must be exchanged within 90 days of the purchase date. The purchase date counts, in the local time where you bought |
| JR Pass on the official web shop | ¥50,000 | Still ¥50,000 (official price page, checked 30 Oct 2026) | The end date of the old price is still not announced; the page now only says "prices are subject to change". For a 3-city trip, the official shop is ¥3,000 cheaper than an agent |
| Kyushu hotel discount (50%, 60% in Kumamoto and Kagoshima, capped at ¥20,000 ≈ RM519 per person) | Bookings opening prefecture by prefecture | Discount applies to stays from 1 Oct | Status on 30 Sept: Fukuoka suspended direct bookings with hotels except in Kitakyushu (official notice, 28 Sept); booking sites (OTAs) had not started. Ask the hotel first. All prefectures |
| Shinkansen Supreme Class (Nozomi private rooms, cars 7 and 10) | Bookings open | Running since 1 Oct | Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, regular season: solo room ¥42,390 (≈ RM1,101), 2-person room ¥60,790 (≈ RM1,579) + a ticket for the second person. Booking only through Smart EX, membership required (JR Central page, checked 30 Sept). Not for a family of four |
For 2 adults + 2 children, the 7-day ordinary JR Pass is now ¥160,000 from an agent (¥150,000 before 1 Oct) and ¥150,000 on the official web shop (checked 30 Oct 2026): a ¥10,000 (≈ RM260) difference. If your trip is only Tokyo ⇄ Osaka/Kyoto, the answer hasn't changed: don't buy the pass (section 6).

Yen to ringgit at ¥100 = RM2.597 (ECB via Frankfurter, 29 September 2026). Sources: official JR Pass price page, checked 30 October 2026; JNTO "Price Increases are Coming to the Nationwide Japan Rail Pass (2026)", 20 April 2026; Kyushu Fukko Ouenwari Fukuoka campaign site, notice of 28 September 2026 (Japanese); JR Central Supreme Class page (English), checked 30 September 2026.
The 21 September update (before the increase) stays below for reference; its "buy by 30 Sept" advice no longer applies.
| Your trip | The number that decides | What to do this week |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo ⇄ Osaka/Kyoto only | Single tickets ≈ ¥29,000–29,600 return; 7-day pass ¥50,000 | Don't buy the pass, before or after 1 Oct. It loses ≈ ¥20,000 per person |
| 3 cities or more, arriving in Japan before the end of December 2026 | A purchase on 21–30 Sept must be exchanged within 90 days, i.e. by 20–29 December | Buy from an agent by 30 Sept at the old price (¥50,000). The purchase date is what counts |
| 3 cities or more, a 2027 trip | 90 days won't reach | Wait. In January, compare the official web shop with agents |
Two links for those two decisions: JR Pass 7/14/21 days on Klook (pay in RM, paper Exchange Order mailed to your home; old price ¥50,000 for purchases up to 30 Sept per the official price page, checked 21 Sept 2026) · one-way Shinkansen ticket Tokyo→Shin-Osaka on Klook (for the golden route without a pass).
Three things I re-checked today:
- The official price page is unchanged (checked 21 Sept 2026): official web shop ¥50,000 / ¥80,000 / ¥100,000; overseas agents "for purchases made by September 30, 2026" the same, and "on or after October 1, 2026" ¥53,000 / ¥84,000 / ¥105,000. The end date of the old price on the official web shop is still unannounced.
- Child prices from 1 October: 7/14/21-day ordinary ¥27,000 / ¥42,000 / ¥53,000 (today ¥25,000 / ¥40,000 / ¥50,000). Green ¥37,000 / ¥58,000 / ¥74,000. A family of 2 adults + 2 children on the 7-day ordinary pass pays ¥150,000 today and ¥160,000 from 1 October: ¥10,000 (≈ RM259) more.
- Klook mails a paper Exchange Order (free delivery); the confirmation email cannot be exchanged in Japan, and you have 90 days from the purchase date to exchange it (Klook page, checked 21 Sept 2026). If your trip is in early October, check the delivery time on that page before paying, and don't leave it to the night of 30 Sept.
The rest of the article (table, Nozomi rules, the honest sum) is unchanged. Previous update: 13 Sept (18 days left).

1. What JR announced (press release, 9 April 2026, in Japanese)
I read the original PDF. Three points:
- Overseas agent prices go up for purchases from 1 October 2026 (local time where you buy).
- The official web sales service (JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation) stays at the current price "for a certain period". JR says it will announce when that period ends. The reason: JR wants people to buy and reserve seats online without going through a counter.
- How you buy and use the pass does not change.
The last increase was on 1 October 2023. This one is about 6%.
2. Price table: old vs new (overseas agents)
Rate: ¥100 = RM2.59 (ECB reference rate, 4 Sept 2026). Child prices are for ages 6–11 at the time of use.
| Type | Validity | Old price (¥) | New price from 1 Oct (¥) | New in RM | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary | 7 days | 50,000 | 53,000 | ≈ RM1,372 | +¥3,000 (≈ RM78) |
| Ordinary | 14 days | 80,000 | 84,000 | ≈ RM2,176 | +¥4,000 |
| Ordinary | 21 days | 100,000 | 105,000 | ≈ RM2,720 | +¥5,000 |
| Green Car | 7 days | 70,000 | 74,000 | ≈ RM1,917 | +¥4,000 |
| Green Car | 14 days | 110,000 | 116,000 | ≈ RM3,004 | +¥6,000 |
| Green Car | 21 days | 140,000 | 147,000 | ≈ RM3,807 | +¥7,000 |
| Child (all types) | — | half the adult price | half the new price (e.g. 7-day ordinary ¥27,000) |
Official web shop: stays at ¥50,000 / 80,000 / 100,000 (ordinary) and ¥70,000 / 110,000 / 140,000 (Green) for now.
3. "Buy before 1 Oct" — what it actually requires
This is the part people miss. Buying early means you hold an Exchange Order, not the pass. Klook's conditions (checked 6 Sept 2026):
- A paper Exchange Order is posted to your home (free delivery). The confirmation email cannot be exchanged in Japan.
- You have 90 days from the purchase date to exchange it for the physical pass at an official exchange office in Japan (airports and major stations).
- After exchanging, you have 30 days to start using it.
- You can buy up to 180 days ahead. Cancellation: 10% fee.
So an Exchange Order bought on 30 September must be exchanged in Japan before the end of December 2026. If you buy now, the official web shop is cheaper (¥50,000, checked 30 Oct 2026) than an agent (¥53,000); what an agent gives you is payment in RM and a paper Exchange Order.
4. After 1 Oct: Klook or the official site?
Honestly, after 1 October 2026 the official web shop is ¥3,000 cheaper (7-day ordinary) for as long as JR keeps the old price (checked 6 Sept 2026). When Klook still makes sense:
- You want to pay in RM with a Malaysian card, and English-language customer support.
- You want the paper Exchange Order in hand before you fly (the official shop expects you to manage everything online, including seat reservations).
- No longer for the price: since 1 Oct agents charge ¥53,000 and the official web shop ¥50,000 (checked 30 Oct 2026), so the ¥3,000 pays for RM payment and the paper Exchange Order.
If you're comfortable with a Japanese website and your trip is after October, the official shop is the cheaper choice. Both links are below; pick what suits you.
5. Nozomi and Mizuho: the pass alone isn't enough
The fastest train on the Tokyo–Osaka line is the Nozomi. The JR Pass does not let you ride Nozomi or Mizuho for free. You need a special add-on ticket for JR Pass holders, sold only in Japan (JR ticket offices or reserved-seat machines):
| Route | Add-on ticket (adult, one ride) |
|---|---|
| Tokyo/Shinagawa – Kyoto or Shin-Osaka | ¥4,960 (≈ RM128) |
| Tokyo/Shinagawa – Hiroshima | ¥6,500 |
| Nagoya – Hiroshima | ¥4,960 |
Source: JR Central, checked 6 Sept 2026. Without this ticket, ride the Hikari (a little slower, more stops) or Kodama. For most travellers, Hikari is fine.
6. The honest sum: 7-day pass vs individual tickets
A Nozomi ticket Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, ordinary reserved seat, regular season, one way: ¥14,720, so ¥29,440 return (JR Central and JR West joint release, 16 Oct 2026; checked 30 Oct 2026). So:
| Plan (7 days) | Individual tickets (estimate) | 7-day ordinary pass | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo → Osaka/Kyoto → Tokyo (golden route) | ¥29,440 return | ¥50,000 (official web shop; agents ¥53,000) | Individual tickets. The pass loses ≈ ¥20,000 |
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Hiroshima → Tokyo | ¥45,430 (official fares, checked 30 Oct 2026) | ¥50,000 | Individual tickets are still cheaper (≈ ¥4,570) |
| Osaka as base: Tokyo ⇄ Osaka + Osaka ⇄ Hiroshima return | ¥51,340 (official fares, checked 30 Oct 2026) | ¥50,000 (official web shop) / ¥53,000 (agent) | The pass pays only on the official web shop (saves ¥1,340); from an agent it loses ¥1,660 |
The full sums with official fares: Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka? (2026).
| Tokyo only + Hakone/Nikko day trips | far below ¥50,000 | — | Don't buy the national pass. Look at regional passes |
|---|
Simple rule: the national pass pays when your individual tickets in 7 days add up to more than ¥50,000 — usually 3 or more cities with one long leg (Hiroshima, Kanazawa, or up to Tohoku). For the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka golden route most Malaysians do, individual tickets are cheaper, and you can ride the Nozomi with no add-on.
To work out your own trip, put your cities into the JR Pass calculator (Japan-Guide). It compares the pass against individual tickets.
7. So what would I do?
- Trip in Nov–Dec 2026, 3 or more cities → buy on the official web shop (¥50,000, checked 30 Oct 2026), cheaper than an agent (¥53,000). Pick an agent only if you want to pay in RM and hold a paper Exchange Order.
- Trip after December, 3 or more cities → buy close to your travel date. Compare the official shop (old price while it lasts) with Klook.
- Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka only → no pass needed. Buy individual Shinkansen tickets (Klook sells single-ride Shinkansen tickets too) and take the Nozomi.
- Travelling with children aged 6–11 → child passes are half price; count them in the total.
I'll update this article when JR announces the end date of the old price on the official web shop, or when Shinkansen fares change.
